Abstract

This book takes a unique approach to explore the moral foundations of nationalism. Drawing on nationalist writings and examining almost 200 years of nationalism in Ireland and Quebec, the author develops a theory of nationalism based on its role in representation. The study of nationalism has tended towards the construction of dichotomies - arguing, for example, that there are political and cultural, or civic and ethnic, versions of the phenomenon. However, as an object of moral scrutiny this bifurcation makes nationalism difficult to work with. The author draws o

Abstract

Abstract

This wide-ranging contribution to the study of nationalism and the social history of music examines the relationship between choral societies and national mobilization in the nineteenth century. From Norway to the Basque country and from Wales to Bulgaria, this pioneering study explores and compares the ways choral societies influenced and reflected the development of national awareness under differing political and social circumstances. By the second half of the nineteenth century, organized communal singing became a primary leisure activity that attracted all layers of society. Though strongly patriotic in tone, choral societies borrowed from each other and relied heavily on prominent German or French models. This volume is the first to address both the national and transnational significance of choral singing. Abstract

In many Southeast Asian countries, anti-colonial nationalist struggles provided the first arena in which women began to be involved in politics. In post-colonial times nationalism continues to offer women opportunities for political activity. Yet books on Southeast Asian nationalist movements make very little - if any - mention of women in their ranks. Biographical studies of politically active women in Southeast Asia are also rare. "Women in Southeast Asian Nationalist Movements" is therefore groundbreaking both in highlighting the roles of women in nationalist movements in the region and in taking a biographical approach. In this book, experts on 7 countries examine the experiences of 12 women who have been active in nationalist movements in Southeast Asia. The women selected for study range from well known to little known, and the nationalist movements in which they have been involved date from the early 20th century to the present day. The chapters show women negotiating their own subjectivity and agency at the confluence of colonialism, patriarchal traditions, and modern ideals of national and personal emancipation. We gain a sense of the constraints imposed on them by wider social and political structures, and of what it was like to live in their given time and place.

Abstract

"European Memory in Populism explores the links between memory, heritage and populism in contemporary Europe and beyond. Focusing on circulating ideas of memory, especially European memory, in contemporary populist discourses, the book also analyses populist ideas in sites and practices of remembrance that usually tend to go unnoticed. More broadly, the theoretical heart of the book reflects upon the similarities, differences, and slippages between memory, populism, nationalism, and cultural racism and the ways in which social memory and heritage contributes to give substance to various ideas of what constitutes the 'people' in populist discourse and beyond. Bringing together a group of political scientists, anthropologists, and cultural and memory studies scholars, the book illuminates the relationship between memory and populism from different angles and in different contexts. The contributors to the volume discuss dominant notions of European heritage that circulate in the public sphere and in political discourse, and consider how the politics of fear relates to such notions of European heritage and identity across Europe and the European Union. Ultimately, this volume will shed light on how notions of a shared European heritage and memory can be used not only to include and connect Europeans, but also to exclude some of them. Investigating the ways in which nationalist populist forces mobilize the idea of a shared, homogeneous European civilization, European Memory in Populism will be of interest to scholars and students in the fields of European studies, memory and heritage studies, migration studies, anthropology, political science and sociology"--
